Tonight I attended an open mic in the College Perk. I had a premise that I really wanted to work on and I saw this room on DCStandup so I thought I'd give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised. The parking lot was completely full and Nick Mullen was nice enough to give me a nice spot (4th). When I took the ''stage'' there was about 40 attentive audience members. I started out with some crowdwork, did some of my old material and worked on some new premises. I thought I had a pretty good set. Afterwards, I was approached by the comic who runs the room, Sariel, who said (he can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's word for word), ''Hey, great set unfortunately it will be the last one you get to do here. Management told me that you're banned. That guy you made fun of is a regular and they told me you can't come back.''
Honestly, I wasn't even fazed. I had a great time, it's their room and I felt no need to explain myself to them. Sariel was only relaying the sentiments of some guy running a coffee shop. I wasn't even upset with management. They are not running a comedy club and it's not really my place to explain to them what they should find acceptable. I was actually going to stay and watch some of the comics who had asked me if I'd watch their sets, drink some coffee, then leave.
Here's where it gets weird. I was in the back talking to Nieazy about his set and I was confronted by a young man who I assume was the manager. I guess he wanted to tell me that I was banned. I will try and recreate the conversation. Nieazy was the only person I know who was standing there so he can let me know if I missed anything:
Granola coffeeshop guy: ''Yeah, I wanted to let you know...
Me: ''Dude, don't even worry about it. I know I'm not allowed back I'm totally fine with that.''
GCG: ''Yeah, but that guy is a regular and...''
Me: ''Seriously, no offense, I'm not even defending myself. I respect your decision and it's fine. No need to explain yourself.''
GCG: ''Yeah, but there no need for you to make fun of...''
